The UK dash cam laws states that dash cams are fully legal to buy, install, and use on the public roads. Everyone with a vehicle can use one however, there are few restrictions to keep in mind when it comes to its usage for business purposes. This includes use for private hire vehicles (PHV) and taxis/cabs.
PHV / Taxi UK Dash Cam Laws
- Your dash cam(s) should be installed in such a way that it doesn’t obstruct the view when driving
- Passengers have to be informed of the presence of the dash cam and that it’s recording
- You are not permitted to edit or manipulate the dash cam footage in any way or circumstance
Make sure dash cam footage are kept secured and stored privately at all times
- Delete any dash cam footage after 28 days (unless told otherwise by the authorities)
- Any data breach such as stolen camera footage must be reported to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) within 72 hours, and passengers should be notified as well if possible
It is important to check with your local council and see what the rules are in your area for using cameras at work. Some councils say it’s voluntary to use dash cams, others say it’s mandatory. Each council should have a list of approved dash cams, for an instance, lets look at Transport of London approved dash cams.
You should also check if you need to register with the ICO, because dash cams for work purposes may have to be registered and there may be some fees. Please check if you are required to do so on ICO online checker.
